Job Description

A well-established California law firm with a respected Trusts & Estates practice is seeking an Estate Planning Attorney to join its team. The practice focuses on sophisticated estate planning and trust and probate administration for a diverse client base, offering attorneys the opportunity to manage matters end-to-end while working closely with clients and senior attorneys.

Responsibilities

  • Draft comprehensive estate planning documents, including revocable trusts, wills, durable powers of attorney, and advance health care directives
  • Draft and administer irrevocable trusts to support sophisticated gift, charitable, and life insurance planning strategies
  • Prepare probate petitions and related court filings and represent clients in probate proceedings
  • Assist clients with post-death trust and estate administration for both taxable and non-taxable estates, including asset marshalling and valuation, preparation of accountings, funding of subtrusts, and distribution of assets
  • Review estate tax returns, gift tax returns, fiduciary income tax returns, and other required tax filings
  • Research and prepare memoranda addressing probate matters and state and federal income, estate, gift, and generation-skipping transfer tax issues
  • Communicate effectively with clients, attorneys, and internal staff
  • Support clients with professionalism, discretion, and compassion
  • Maintain accurate time records with an annual billable expectation of approximately 1,500 hours
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, including local and national conferences
  • Perform additional duties as needed

Qualifications

  • Active California Bar membership in good standing; LL.M. in Taxation preferred
  • Two or more years of experience in estate planning and post-death trust and probate administration
  • Strong drafting, research, and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with document management systems preferred
